FAQ Acupuncture for Pregnancy
Important questions answered.
If you still need help, please get in touch with me and I’ll be happy to re-assure you.
Is acupuncture safe to have when pregnant?
Yes, clinical trials have showed that Acupuncture is perfectly safe to have in pregnancy if you are having treatment with a Licensed Practitioner who has undertaken a Licentiate Programme.
Which conditions associated with pregnancy do you treat?
There are many conditions associated with pregnancy that can benefit from acupuncture such as:
Nausea and vomiting
Symphysis Pubis Disorder
Haemorrhoids
Sinusitis
Bleeding (always seek midwife help immediately)
Threatened miscarriage. (always seek midwife help immediately)
Breech presentations (performed between 34 and 37 weeks, with some conditions ruled out and in agreement with midwife team)
Birth preparation
Induction of labour (performed at 39 weeks in a risk free pregnancy with midwife agreement)
Do you perform treatment for Breech presentations?
Yes I perform treatments for a Breech presentation where contra-indications have been ruled out, and with the agreement of your midwife team. This treatment can only be performed between week 34 and week 37 of your pregnancy. Too early and baby will likely reposition themselves back into Breech, and too late and there will not be enough room for babe to turn. You will attend an appointment with me, and I will send you home with some moxa sticks and some clear instructions on how to use them, to be used daily.
Do you do birth preparation treatments?
Yes I perform birth preparation treatments from week 34. This is not a treatment which brings on labour, rather works on building the energy of the pregnant mum-to- be to help build her strength for her upcoming birth, works on reducing any discomfort of the last stages of pregnancy, and helps with sleep so she feels well rested before the birth. It is best to attend weekly appointments from week 34 up until birth.
Do you do treatments which may bring on labour when desired/ needed?
Yes I perform labour commencement treatments from week 39 when contra-indications have been ruled out and with the agreement of your midwife team. This works best with a treatment regime of 3 appointments spaced as closely together as possible, depending on availability. (Please note: This is a treatment that works on moving energy, but ultimately timing is up to baby! They generally don’t come unless their lungs are fully developed and Mum and baby’s hormones are lined up. If Mum and baby are ready, it can get things started).
I have been having regular fertility treatment with you, have an appointment booked, and have become pregnant.
Should I keep our upcoming appointment?
Yes! Firstly I would love to share your news. And we will take the opportunity to discuss what the recommendations are for your upcoming pregnancy. If you have experienced recurrent losses, or you feel heightened anxiety about your pregnancy, it may be suggested that you continue with treatment with me for a while. If this is not the case, or you prefer not to attend, I will wish you well and let you know how I can support you through your pregnancy should any pregnancy conditions arise. I understand that emotionally this will be a heightened time for you, and will respect your privacy, if you choose not to attend any appointments. I will not contact you during this time, as I understand you may be feeling a little guarded, but please know that if you have had fertility treatment with me, I am available if you need me.
